Teachers are arguably the most important members of our society. They give children purpose, set them up for success as citizens of our world, and inspire in them a drive to do well and succeed in life. In my years of photography I have met some of the most amazing people who are teachers, changing the life of children in their communities.
For #WorldTeachersDay 5th October, I would like to celebrate these special people… stay tuned for their stories this week!
I met 30 year old Ndikumana Imelde while on assignment for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency in Tanzania. A refugee herself from Burundi she teaches pre-school children at Jugudi Primary School which opened in 2015 at Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Kasulu District, western Tanzania. Without a classroom she has to take her class outside. Despite this she is such a positive person: “We don’t have any walls where I can put up pictures so it is a little more difficult for my children to understand, but through singing, dancing and smiles I do my best each day to teach them and make them happy.”
